USFJ STATEMENT ON FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF GREAT EAST JAPAN EARTHQUAKE
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - U.S. Forces, Japan and 5th Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. John Dolan released the following statement today to mark the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake: “It has been five years since the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011, and the world will long remember the courage, strength, and perseverance of the Japanese people that followed.
U.S. Forces were proud to stand by the heroic efforts of the Japanese civil authorities, the Jietai, and ordinary citizens who rushed to provide aid and assistance to those in need. The unprecedented U.S. and Japanese recovery operation that followed was carried out in the spirit of friendship that animates our alliance.
Today, the Japan-U.S. alliance is a beacon of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region. For over seventy years the U.S. and Japan have stood side by side as a symbol of peace, stability, and prosperity.
March 11th is a day of remembrance for the victims, their friends and families, and everyone who continues to help rebuild the devastated areas. Today, we share this solemn obligation and will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

東日本大震災５年を迎えて
横田基地―在日米軍司令部および第５空軍司令官、ジョンドーラン米空軍中将は東日本大震災から５年目を迎える本日を記念して以下声明を発表します。
「２０１１年３月１１日に発生した東日本大震災から５年が経ちました。世界は震災直後から継続されている日本の皆様の勇気、強さ、そして忍耐力を今後、長い年月を経ても記憶に残します。在日米軍は助けが必要な人々へ直ちに物資を届け手を差し伸べた日本の民間機関、自衛隊、そして日本国民の皆様の英雄的な努力の傍らに寄り添うことができたことを誇りに思います。前例のない米国と日本の復興支援作戦は私たちの同盟を活気付ける友情の精神のもと行われました。今日、日米同盟はアジア・太平洋地域における民主主義の烽火です。米国と日本は平和、安定、繁栄の象徴として７０年以上隣同士に並んで共に歩んできました。３月１１日は犠牲になった方々、その御友人達、御家族や、今でもなお被災地を復興するために手を差し伸べ続けている全ての人々へ想いをはせる日です。本日、日本と米国は厳粛な責務を共有し、これからもお互いの想いと祈りの中で維持していきます。」
