USFJ, JSDF wrap successful Keen Edge 2016

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan – The Japan Self-Defense Forces and U.S. military concluded their bilateral command post exercise, Keen Edge 16, today.

The two-week event was the latest in a series of joint, bilateral command post exercises designed to increase combat readiness and interoperability between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and American forces.

“This year’s Keen Edge was our first opportunity to put into practice some of the new coordination mechanisms recently established between the Government of Japan and the United States government,” said Lt. Gen. John Dolan, commander of U.S. Forces, Japan. “The Indo-Asia-Pacific region holds the majority of the world’s people and trade, and the Japan-U.S. alliance is the bedrock of peace, security and prosperity in this region. Exercises like Keen Edge are a decisive demonstration of the strength of the friendship between our people.”

Keen Edge has historically been part of an annual exercise series that alternates between field training exercises (called Keen Sword) and command post exercises. During Keen Edge 16, various Japanese and U.S. headquarter staffs employed computer simulations to practice the steps they would take in the event of a crisis or contingency.

Command post exercises are a cost-effective way of providing military participants with realistic and unobtrusive training in a simulated crisis. Exercise participants used a computer-based system, called the Joint Theater Level Simulation system, to direct and respond to exercise events.

“This exercise is very important because it brings the U.S. military and JSDF together to train for potential crises,” said Col. Houston Cantwell, U.S. Forces in Japan director of operations. “The training tests both nations ability to work together in a controlled environment giving both sides a better understanding of their combined capabilities.”

Approximately 600 U.S. personnel participated in Keen Edge 16, including those assigned to U.S. Forces, Japan Headquarters; 5th Air Force; U.S. Naval Forces, Japan; U.S. Army, Japan; Marine Forces, Japan.

The exercise was directed by Lt. Gen. Dolan and Japan Joint Staff Chief of Staff Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano.

在日米軍司令部運用部長 ヒューストン キャントウェル大佐は「この演習は米軍と自衛隊が潜在的危機に対応するために共に訓練する為、大変に重要です。」とコメントしました。また、「この訓練はコントロールされた、そして互いの統合された能力をより良く理解できる環境の下、両国が共に従事する訓練を検証します。」と述べました。

キーンエッジ１６には在日米軍司令部、第５空軍司令部、在日米海軍司令部、在日米陸軍司令部、在日米軍海兵隊から約６００名の隊員が参加しました。

この演習は在日米軍司令官ジョンドーラン空軍中将と統合幕僚長河野克俊海将により指揮されました。
