U.S. Forces and Okinawa Community Leaders Collaborate to Enhance Safety and Partnership

Representatives from the U.S. Forces on Okinawa, Okinawa Prefectural Government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Okinawa Liaison Office, U.S. Consulate General Naha, Okinawa Defense Bureau, Okinawa Prefectural Police, and Okinawa City, met at Camp Foster today to convene the first meeting of the Okinawa Community Partnership Forum.

Discussions centered on proactive strategies to improve safety and security, including a comprehensive review of existing and potential new measures. The U.S. military participants provided an overview of the Headquarters U.S. Forces Japan base-line Liberty Policy an existing preventive measure across all service components.

In that context, the U.S. military solicited feedback and suggestions for updating the “Okinawa Orientation Overview,” a briefing that was developed in 2016 through close coordination among the Okinawa Prefectural Government, the Government of Japan, and U.S. Forces Japan, which the U.S. service components in Okinawa provide to new arrivals.

The Okinawa Prefectural Government, Okinawa Prefectural Police, and the Okinawa Defense Bureau outlined Japanese crime prevention measures and initiatives for the Okinawa community. The Okinawa Prefectural Police explained that they plan to provide lectures for U.S. Forces in Okinawa on crime prevention.

Furthermore, participants evaluated the U.S.-Japan Joint Community Safety Patrol conducted in Okinawa City and discussed the future direction of joint patrols, such as its expansion to other areas in Okinawa, including Naha City, as requested by the U.S. military.

The meeting highlighted the importance of ongoing communication and collaboration between USFJ and the Okinawa community. Both sides reaffirmed their dedication to fostering a positive and mutually beneficial relationship based on trust and respect. Future meetings are planned regularly to continue this vital dialogue and ensure sustained progress towards shared goals.

この会合では、在日米軍と沖縄地域社会の継続的なコミュニケーションと協力の重要性が強調されました。双方は、信頼と尊重に基づき、前向きで互恵的な関係の構築に向け尽力することを再確認しました。今後もこの重要な対話を継続し、共通の目標に向けた持続的な進展を確保するため、会合が定期的に開催される予定です。
