New Forum to Enhance U.S.-Japan Cooperation in Okinawa

U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ), in cooperation with the Government of Japan (GOJ), is pleased to announce the establishment of a new forum for cooperation dedicated to enhancing communication and fostering shared understanding between U.S. Forces and local stakeholders. The first forum is set for May 9 and will bring together representatives from the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Okinawa Prefectural Police, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Okinawa Liaison Office, U.S. Consulate General Naha, Okinawa Defense Bureau, and U.S. Forces in Okinawa to address a range of issues and improve community relations, including the recent joint patrol conducted in Okinawa City.

“Trust and dialogue have long been at the heart of the U.S.-Japan Alliance and its extraordinary achievements,” said U.S. Ambassador to Japan George Glass. “The launch of the new forum in Okinawa reflects the Alliance’s determination to ensure that the all-important voices of the base-hosting communities in Japan are heard and that in this new golden age of U.S.-Japan relations, we continue to nurture our bonds of friendship and respect through sincere and open communication and a culture of cooperation.”

The forum will meet periodically and intends to provide a platform for open dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, focusing on finding mutually beneficial solutions that foster harmony and mutual respect. While still in its early stages, these initial steps are crucial in laying the foundation for long-term cooperation and improvement. To date, multiple rounds of consultative meetings have been held to establish a charter for the forum where participants will discuss matters of importance for both communities.

“We firmly believe the Community Partnership Forum is essential for advancing the U.S.-Japan alliance and are optimistic about the potential for positive outcomes through this forum,” said Lt Gen Stephen Jost, USFJ and Fifth Air Force commander. “Strong relationships with the communities where we live and work is essential for fostering trust. Those bonds ultimately contribute to a more robust and enduring alliance, enhancing our ability to achieve shared security goals and overall peace and prosperity of the region.”

USFJ and the OPG have been engaged in ongoing dialogue since the announcement of the Liberty Order updates last year and are committed to engaging in constructive discussions to address shared concerns and key issues. This effort will not only enhance the security and well-being of both communities but also serves as a symbol of shared commitment to public safety. Through continued collaboration and open communication, the new forum aims to build stronger, more resilient relationships between U.S. Forces and Japanese communities in Okinawa.

フォーラムは定期的に開催され、調和と相互尊重を育む互恵的な解決策を見出すことに重点を置き、オープンな対話と協力的な問題解決のためのプラットフォームを提供することを意図しています。まだ初期段階とはいえ、この第一段階は長期的な協力と改善の基礎を築く上で極めて重要です。現在までに、両コミュニティーにとって重要な事柄について参加者が話し合うフォーラムの憲章を制定するため、複数回の協議会が開かれています。

「地域パートナーシップ・フォーラムは日米同盟を前進させるために必要不可欠であり、このフォーラムを通じて前向きな成果が得られる可能性を前向きにとらえている。」と在日米軍兼第５空軍司令官スティーブン・ジョスト中将は述べました。「私たちが暮らし、働く地域社会との強い絆は、信頼を育むために不可欠です。こうした絆は最終的に、より強固で永続的な同盟の助けとなり、共有する安全保障上の目標を達成する能力を高め、地域全体の平和と繁栄に寄与する」とも述べました。
