Readout of Visit to U.S. facilities in Okinawa by Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya

United States Forces Japan Office of Public Affairs provides the following readout from today’s visit to U.S. facilities in Okinawa by Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya: 

U.S. Forces Japan (USFJ) and the Third Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) hosted Defense Minister Iwaya today in Okinawa for briefings and an orientation. Lieutenant General H. Stacy Clardy, III MEF Commander, appreciated the opportunity to discuss the strategically critical role U.S. and Japanese forces play in the region.    

The orientation included visits to Camp Schwab and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Futenma.  During his visit to Camp Schwab, Minister Iwaya received a briefing from the Okinawa Defense Bureau (ODB) on the Futenma Replacement Facility (FRF), highlighting the close partnership between U.S. and Japanese personnel. 

After his arrival at MCAS Futenma, the Minister conducted an office call with Lt. Gen. Clardy and received III MEF and MCAS Futenma command briefs.  During the briefings, Lt. Gen. Clardy discussed a number of training and operational issues in Okinawa; the importance of readiness and realistic training; community relations; and the FRF.

At the conclusion of these briefings, Minister Iwaya discussed the importance of the U.S. military presence on Okinawa and reaffirmed that the U.S.-Japan Alliance is the cornerstone of peace and security in the region. Iwaya also commented that he is looking forward to seeing U.S. and Japanese Ospreys, which are currently conducting training in the U.S., responding together to future crises.

Following the meetings and orientation, U.S. Marine leaders expressed their appreciation for the Minister’s visit, as well as his strong support for the Alliance and the U.S. personnel defending Japan’s security. They also expressed their appreciation for the support and hospitality they enjoy from the people of Okinawa.

岩屋毅防衛大臣による沖縄米軍施設訪問について

在日米軍司令部広報部は本日の岩屋毅防衛大臣の沖縄における米軍施設訪問に関して以下のように紹介致します：

在日米軍司令部と第3海兵遠征軍（III MEF）は本日、ブリーフィングとオリエンテーションにより岩屋防衛大臣の沖縄訪問を支援致しました、ステーシー・クラーディ中将は、米軍と日本の自衛隊の地域での重要な役割について議論する機会を得たことに感謝致しました。

オリエンテーションは、キャンプシュワブと米海兵隊普天間航空基地訪問を含みました。キャンプシュワブ訪問中、岩屋大臣は沖縄防衛局より普天間移転施設に関して日米職員の緊密なパートナーシップを強調したブリーフィングを受けました。

普天間基地到着後、大臣は第3海兵遠征軍司令官クラーディ中将を表敬訪問し、第3海兵遠征軍と普天間基地のコマンドブリーフィングを受けました。ブリーフィング中、クラーディ中将は沖縄における多くの訓練と運用課題、即応体制と現実的訓練の重要性、地域との関係、そして普天間移転施設について議論しました。

ブリーフィングの終わりに、岩屋大臣は、沖縄における米軍の存在の重要性について議論し、日米同盟が地域の平和と安全の礎であることを再確認しました。岩屋大臣はまた、現在米国で訓練を行っており、将来の危機に共に対応するであろう米国と日本のオスプレイを観ることを楽しみにしているとコメントしました。

ミーティングとオリエンテーションに続いて、米海兵隊の指揮官らは、大臣の訪問と、同盟と日本の安全を守る米国人員に対する大臣の強い支持に対し感謝を表明しました。また、沖縄の人々からの支援と親切なもてなしに対しても感謝の意を表明しました。
